Harry Potter Therapy

Hello, you wonderful people. I hope your New Year is off to a wonderful start.

I am honored and humbled by your outpouring of support of “Superhero Therapy“. I am thrilled an excited to be working on a few more geeky psychology projects, one of them being a self-help ‘Harry Potter Therapy’ book, which I am planning to make available for free.

My previous posts on the psychology of Harry Potter, focusing on anxiety, depression, and PTSD, have all resulted in a lot of people asking me to write a book on Harry Potter therapy. I am currently at the beginning stages of writing this book and also have several other book projects that I am working on. I am asking for your help. If you are interested in ‘Harry Potter Therapy’ and/or think it would benefit you or others that you know, please like, share, and comment on this post or video. The more interest there is, the faster I am going to write this book.

Thank you again for all your support and inspiration. Have a wonderful New Year!

BIO: I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, a scientist, and a full time geek. I use Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Management. My book, “Superhero Therapy” with Little, Brown Book Group released on December 1, 2016 in the U.K. and is expected to be released with New Harbinger on August 1, 2017.

A little about me: I was born in Ukraine. Having survived Chernobyl radiation exposure, multiple health problems and religious persecution, I moved to the United States with my family with refugee status. Not speaking a word of English, I was heavily bullied in school. On most days back then I just wanted to die… All of that changed when I saw the first X-Men movie in year 2000. That movie told a story about a group of mutants, most of whom were affected by radiation and were ostracized by society, just like me. It was my first experience with common humanity, a shared difficult experience. It inspired me to want to make a difference in the lives of others, just like the X-Men did. I finished school and then went on to pursue a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and then a PhD in Psychology in order to be able to help people who were also affected by trauma. I studied compassion cultivation training (CCT) at Stanford and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) through UCSD. I am honored to be able to dedicate my life to my biggest passion – helping others heal.

  1. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Nevada, and I also reference geekiness/ nerdiness in my therapeutic stance, so I am super interested in what you’re offering! 🙂

  2. I would love to read a Harry Potter self-help book. I have recently been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I’m on medication for it, which helps, but I still need to talk myself through daily struggles. Your Harry Potter articles about anxiety and depression have been helpful and I would like to read more.

  3. I’m researching topics and I’m already in despair because I’m grappling what to study on for my MS Clinical Psych thesis when I came across this and my geek heart just skipped a beat. I’m a huuuuuge fan of Harry Potter so definitely will support this idea and probably use this in the future! By the way, do you have published journal articles on this topic? Would love to read up on them and hopefully come up with something. Thank you!

  4. Yes absolutely! I have been reading and re-reading Harry Potter since the first book came out (I was 11) and the books are still helping me through troubled times. I only recently started suffering from depression and for the first time I truly understand what it would be like to encounter a dementor – searching for my patronus is helping me on the road to recovery.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment. I’m so glad that the search for your Patronus is helping in your recovery. I’m currently in the process of writing there book. The expected release date is September 1, 2017 🙂

  5. Yep, very much interested in this. I’m a Clinical Psychologist practising in the UK and often use themes/characters/scenarios/quotes from Harry Potter in my therapeutic work. it would be great to have a resource to refer to with my clients!

  6. I would LOVE Harry Potter self-help book. I just recently discovered geek therapy and it’s something that I would love to start incorporating in my practice. I’m looking to work with adolescents when I’m finished in May with my MA and finally get my license and this is right up my alley.

    1. Hi Kristina,
thank you so much for your comment. So excited that you learned about geek therapy. My friend and colleague, Josue Cardona, started it and he’s incredible. So excited that you’re looking to incorporate pop culture into therapy.
I’m working on the Harry Potter Therapy book right now. Hope this helps with your clients 🙂

  7. I am definitely interested in this. I am a MFT grad student and a total Harry Potter nerd. Keep me posted on this!

    1. I am looking into using Harry Potter and superheroes in therapy with kids and young adults. I would love to hear more about your work!

  8. Hello there! I’d love to chat with you about Harry Potter and it’s possible uses in therapy. I have a BA in psychology and will be starting a PhD program in Counseling Psychology in the fall. I wrote a lot of papers about the Harry Potter series during undergrad, for psychology classes as well as theology and philosophy. I hope to do more research on the uses of fiction and other narrative stories in therapy as I continue my journey to become a licensed psychologist.

    1. Hi Jordan,
How exciting! Congrats on your starting the PhD program in the fall. I would love to chat with you about it. I’m traveling a lot over the next month. Would you mind emailing me in June, we can try to set something up then, perhaps? Here’s my email: SuperheroTherapy@gmail.com
      Warmly,

  9. Hi Janina,

I’m a therapist looking to expand my ideas in using Harry Potter more with clients. I’m looking for your Harry Potter Therapy ebook, but I can’t seem to find it. I was wondering if you knew where to look for it.

    Thanks,

    Joel
