  1. I am speaking at Comic con at the same time as you! We are presenting our tool to help veterans with PTSD by creating comics. Our approach is really to change their attitudes and get them involved in evidence based therapy like prolonged exposure therapy.
We are in in a clinical trial but we do have a playtest server if you are interested in exploring it SAGA. More info at saga.sift.net and on twitter at @sagaveterans

  2. I work with children age 10-14 and would love more information of this therapy to incorporate in my Day Treatment Program. How can I be trained? How much is it? Where/when is it? Thank you for your time.

    Brandy Barnett

    1. Hi Brandy,
so great to hear from you. I’m so happy to hear that you are thinking of incorporating Superhero Therapy into your Day Treatment Program. I’m happy to help. The trainings occur year round and rates/availability depend on whether you want to come to San Diego, and get trained in person or have a Skype consultation session. I also travel to clinical sites to provide training, in which case the sites reimburse/cover my travel expenses. My rates are negotiable, the standard fee being $175/hr. It ends up being less expensive if it is a group training or consultation. Most people reserve a 2 hour slot and then consult as needed.
I’m happy to help in any way I can or answer any further questions.
      Cheers 🙂

  3. My name is Geovany Martinez and I have been utilizing Superhero therapy for several years in my clinical work with adults, adolescent, and children. I have found that utilizing pop culture, superheroes, and other geek culture has a way of providing additional psycho-education and treatment to patients.

  4. Hi Janina,

I’m Nishigandha Date. I’m a psychologist practising and teaching in India. I have been using pop culture references with my students while teaching mental disorders and have tried them with some of my clients. It has helped a lot and I would love to learn more about superhero therapy from you. Do let me know. Thanks.

    1. Hi Nishigandha,
Thank you so much for your comment! I am so glad to hear that you’ve been using elements of pop culture in your practice and teaching and am so glad that it is helpful. The world needs more superheroes like you. 🙂
I’m happy to let you know more about Superhero therapy. Please feel free to email me any questions you have: superherotherapy@gmail.com and I’m happy to talk to you further 🙂
      Cheers!

  5. Hi Janina,

Saturday was my second time attending a panel you were part of at Comic Con (2015: The India Inkblot Test panel and 2016: Superhero Therapy panel). You mentioned that you would be doing trainings in the Spring with your new book. is there a mailing list available to sign up for to keep updated? I am a therapist presently working with high school students and I currently, and have always used pop culture (especially nerdy pop culture given my own personal geekiness) in treatment pretty successfully. would love to learn more about what it is you’re doing and how you specifically implement your own structure. A co-worker and I were both at the Superhero Therapy panel on Saturday, and we’re hoping to try to convince our program director to look into having a department-wide training with you.

  6. Hi Janina,
I have been using CBT in combination with TWD for awhile now and thought I had invented a new form of therapy until I came across your website. I am a child and youth counsellor in Canada and TWD is extremely popular with teens. TWD gives us common ground and many of them think it’s awesome that I am so into the show. I just ordered the TWD and Psychology book, I am excited to use it in my practice 🙂 Thank you for your work on this new adventure in counselling.

  7. Hi,
I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist in Ft Lauderdale Fl and I have been using the childhood backstories of super heroes in therapy since I graduated in 2012. I am also trained in AF-CBT, TF-CBT and EMDR. I didn’t know someone had actually developed a treatment model until this week! I ordered a couple of your books on Amazon and look forward to seeing how they can enhance my practice.

    1. Hi Dawn,
It’s wonderful to meet you! That’s fantastic! I’m always glad to meet other therapists implementing Superhero Therapy. Thanks so much for ordering the books. Hope you find them helpful.
      Cheers! 🙂

      1. Hi Dr. Scarlet,
My name is Gabriela Fabiani but people call me Gaby. My practice is called Mind over Matter Spiritual Wellness Center, LLC. I am in the process of opening my own Superhero Training Headquarters in Phoenix, Az. I’m finishing up my Associates Degree in Transformational Mind Body Psychology. I too have loved Superheroes all my life and have been in the Cosplay/ Convention world for the last 15 years. I’ve been using Superhero concepts in my Clinical Hypnotherapy practice and was elated when I came across your Superhero-Therapy which I now use for Anxiety Disorders, especially S.A.D with my concept which I call, one super cape at a time. I also use your wonderful book. I look at this Superhero-Therapy as a movement to help all anxieties in a safe place. I would like to know more and collaborate our passion with our love of Superheroes and helping people with anxieties. 🧠🦸🏻‍♀️💥💪🏼

        1. Hi Gaby,
It’s wonderful to meet you. I am thrilled and excited that you will be implementing Superhero Therapy practices into your clinical work. Please let me know if I can help in any way. May the Force be with you 🙂

  8. Hello Dr. Scarlet,
I am the principal of an alternative education charter school for Grades 7-12 with a trauma-sensitive approach. Many of our students are motivated by our school Comic Con club. Do you have training sessions or upcoming conferences for classroom teachers who work with students at high risk of chronic absenteeism and school dropout?

    Sincerely,
Susan Nisan, Fusion Charter School, Turlock, California

    1. Hi Susan,
Thank you so much for your comment. It’s wonderful to hear from you. I’m thrilled to hear that your school is already utilizing such wonderful approaches to help the kids. I have one upcoming training in September to help kids and adults who survived trauma via Superhero Therapy: https://www.praxiscet.com/events/superhero-sandiego/
Alternatively, we can talk about me doing an event specifically for your school. Feel free to email me to chat more: superheroTherapy@gmail.com
Hope to chat with you more about this 🙂

  9. Hi Dr. Janina, my name is Traci and I co-facilitate a group for college students (18-22) on the Spectrum, and with severe anxiety/more severe psychological issues. Would you say your book on Superhero therapy would be ;useful for college students (most of whom are very genre-centric) or would it be too simplistic? Thank you! Traci B.

  10. Hello Dr. Scarlet,
I met you last month in San Diego, and we spoke about passions, and mine to have a plant nursery and start an instagram account for my beautiful plants. I haven’t yet, but I will. 😉
When my colleague, Danielle, and I returned from your training we excitedly told our colleagues about it, and they have asked us to give a one-day training to our small company on the topic! We’re delighted to share what we learned, and even plan to ask everyone to dress as their favorite character for the training.

    1. Dear Jessie (AKA Poison Ivy)
It’s so wonderful to hear from you. I’m thrilled that you and Danielle will be doing the training. Hope it goes well. Keep superheroing and don’t forget your plants 🌱:)

  11. Hi Dr. Scarlet,

I didn’t know this was an ACTUAL thing! I’m so excited that it is! I’m currently in my final semester of grad school to become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. I’ve been toying with the idea of incorporating my own love of pop culture into therapy anyway as often a client will be discussing a situation, dilemma, or a feeling that I’ve seen displayed so well in a favorite show or movie. It wasn’t until I took the “My Career Story” Workbook as part of my Test and Measures class last semester that I really started to exam my own love of pop culture and how that has influenced my life (it asks about role models real or fictional and I think majority of mine were fictional) . I’ve been trying to find ways to incorporate it into my therapy with clients but thought I was just an oddball out.

I would LOVE to get in touch with you regarding this type of therapy. I’m also working on my final Capstone project and was initially googling this topic to see what, if any, research there is in favor of this. If you have any I’d be honored to be able to read it and utilize it as a resource. There are a few books and articles and dissertations that I have access to through my school but none specifically on Superhero Therapy as a regular practice/intervention.

Thank you so much for being a geek and mixing it with your professional life, then going so far as to share it with the rest of us nerds!

    Live Long and Prosper,
    Steph

    1. Dear Steph,
Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment and kind words. Congratulations to you on your progress in your grad school! How exciting! We need more people like you in the field.
The research related to this topic is often referred to as “parasocial relationships” and “social surrogacy” – both a great search terms to use when you’re searching for research articles. I have a few books out on these topics if you are interested and if you would like to ask any specific questions, feel free to email me: SuperheroTherapy at gmail.
May the Force be with you 🙂

    1. Hello Sabrina,

Thank you so much for your interest. At this time, due to the Coronavirus, the training will most likely be rescheduled. Once we know more, we will be updating our Trainings page with more information. Stay safe and healthy. Live long and prosper.

  12. Wow! This is mighty stuff! I’m really excited by this Superhero Therapy – very new for me!
I live in Australia, working as a chaplain in a Primary School, and would love to do the April training. Is it possible to watch recordings as the virtual live event is the middle of the night here?
Thank you Janina for the enormous difference you are making in our lives.

    1. Hi Meg,
Thank you so much for your message. Yes, i believe that you should be able to watch the recordings for the April training for at least a few weeks after the training.
      I hope this helps 🙂

  13. Hi – Can I be added to a mailing list for blogs/announcements, etc? Sorry I could not find where on the website to do this!

  14. Can you add me to your mailing list? I want to take your training but didn’t see anything coming up that I can plan for that quickly.

  15. My name is Chris, and I’m a peer support specialist at a local county level mental health clinic. We have been using the book Superhero Therapy to work with some of our young adult clients and it’s been well received.

In January we’re going to have group therapy based on the book. The group will be facilitated by myself and one of the clinicians here. Any advice would be appreciated. If you’re interested, we can also provide feedback on process and outcomes.

    1. Hi Chris,
Thank you so much for your comment. Thanks so exciting. I’d be happy to have a quick meeting about it if you’d like. Please feel free to email me: Janina.Scarlet at gmail

    1. Hi Denita,
Yes, many providers who utilize Superhero Therapy, use it for depression, anxiety, chronic illness, and other challenges, are you interested in superhero therapy training as a clinician or a a client?
